Four Nigerians arrested for parodying a marriage

Shariah is applied in 12 Muslim states of Nigeria.

In Nigeria, four young men were arrested by the Islamic police in Kano, northern part of the country, for celebrating a marriage spoof broadcast on Facebook Live.

The concerned, who are between 30 and 32 years, were arrested Tuesday 9 July, 2019 in Kano, a few days after the broadcast of a fake ceremony of union live on social networks.

The (fake) groom, Sanusi Abdullahi, confessed to having "offered for fake" during the "online marriage", a dowry of 20,000 naira ($ 56) to a virtual friend of Facebook who is in the city of Maiduguri, in the north-east of the country.

The sum was to be paid only if the latter moved to her "husband" house.

His three friends appeared as witnesses at the ceremony, which they considered a "joke" between friends.
Shortly after the live broadcast of the parody, the controversy raged in Kano, where many radical imams called for the arrest and prosecution of young men.

They are accused of "mocking the sanctity of the institution"

The fake groom received death threats on his mobile phone and was attacked as he was leaving the mosque Monday night.

Sharia law is applied alongside the federal and local justice system in 12 Muslim states in northern Nigeria.

In December 2018, Hisbah, the Islamic police arrested 11 young women suspected of preparing a lesbian marriage.
