Tunisia bids farewell to president Essebsi at funeral

Tunisia on Saturday bid farewell to its late President, Beji Caid Essebsi, who passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 92.
The body of late President Essebsi will be buried in Al-Zallag cemetery in the Tunisian capital.
The burial will be in a procession that will take place from the presidential palace in Carthage with the participation of heads of state and government from 23 Arab and other foreign countries.
The Tunisian Interior Ministry said that extraordinary measures had been taken to secure the funeral for Essebsi.
Essebsi was born on Nov. 29, 1926, in Sidi Bou Said in the northern suburbs of the capital.
He studied law in Paris until 1950; two years later, he became a lawyer in his home country.
His first involvement in politics dates back to 1941 when he joined the Neo Destour party, a Tunisian political party that was founded by a group of Tunisian nationalist politicians during the French colonisation.
Following the country’s independence from France in 1956, he began to exercise high political responsibilities.
He took over the Tunisian presidency after winning the 2014 elections.

Arsenal agree stunning £72 million deal for Nicolas Pepe

Arsenal have reached an agreement with French club Lille to sign Ivory Coast winger Nicolas Pepe in a deal worth 80m euros (£72m).
The Gunners will pay for the 24-year-old via a series of instalments that suit their restricted budget for this summer.
An agreement between Arsenal and Pepe’s representatives still needs to be finalised.
But the transfer is expected to be completed in the next 24 to 48 hours.
Italian side Napoli also met Lille’s asking price, but their proposal was rejected by the player’s camp.
Pepe tends to operate on the right wing and cut in on to his left foot, but can also be used as a striker in a 4-4-2 formation.
He scored 23 goals for Lille last season and satisfies Arsenal’s need for a wide player with pace and high technical ability.
Arsenal offered £40m for Crystal Palace’s Ivory Coast winger Wilfried Zaha earlier this month, but their Premier League rivals value the player at about £80m.

DR Congo rivals forge government pact 7 months after polls

The two rival political camps in DR Congo Friday forged a pact on forming a government, six months after President Felix Tshisekedi took power from veteran ruler Joseph Kabila, officials said.
Tshisekedi was elected in December to replace Kabila who presided over sub-Saharan Africa’s biggest country for nearly two decades.
He took power at the end of January but has struggled to form a government as Kabila’s Common Front for Congo (FCC) coalition won comfortable majorities in both houses of parliament as well as provincial assemblies.
Kabila’s supporters also dominated elections for governorships across the country.
The current, outgoing government comprises ministers from the Kabila era.
Tshisekedi’s CACH alliance in the legislature has been holding tortuous talks with the FCC to break the stalemate.
“An agreement has just been reached on Friday between the FCC and CACH,” Nehemie Mwilanya, the coordinator of the pro-Kabila alliance, announced on Twitter.
He said Prime Minister Sylvestre Ilunkamba, who was proposed by Kabila and backed by Tshisekedi, could be formally nominated as early as next week.
“This will be a government of 65 members: 42 coming from the FCC and 23 from CACH,” said Jean-Baudouin Mayo, a negotiator for CACH.
Mwilanya said both sides had made “reciprocal concessions” but neither provided details on who would get key ministries such as interior, defence, economy, finance and mining.
“Now we are going to join forces. That is to say we will be of the same political family,” Tshisekedi said a month ago.
The opposition views Tshisekedi as a puppet of Kabila.
Tshisekedi emerged victorious in elections that marked the Democratic Republic of Congo’s first peaceful transition of power since the vast mineral-rich country gained independence from Belgium in 1960.
But the vote was marred by allegations of rigging, and Tshisekedi is struggling to push ahead with pledges of reform.
The unstable country’s politics remain overshadowed by Kabila, who amassed extensive clout after 18 years in power.

Nicolas Pépé to decide on his future with four clubs in the running

Four clubs are in the running to sign Lille sensation Nicolas Pépé with the player now set to make a decision on where his future lies.
Pépé was one of the breakout stars in Ligue 1 last season, netting 22 goals in all competitions and earning admiring glances from sides all over Europe.
La Voix du Nord, who are the local paper in Lille, say that four sides are now battling it out to land the forward, with each side having agreed an €80m fee with Les Dogues.
Apparently it’s Liverpool, Manchester United, Napoli and Inter who Pépé will have to decide between, with his agent’s commission believed to play a huge part in where the 24-year-old ends up.
It’s claimed the representatives want €5m, a fee well above the usual rate.
Either way, it looks as if Pépé has played his last game for Lille and will make a decision on his next club soon.

HALF OF MILLENNIALS PRETEND THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS HAPPIER THAN IT REALLY IS

Half of millennials pretend to others that their relationship is happier than it really is, a new study finds.
We all know those couples who clog up our news feed with gushing statuses and inappropriate selfies but it turns out this kind of relationship bragging could be a way of masking insecurities.
An in-depth survey of more than 2,000 UK adults, carried out by relationship support charity Relate, revealed that more than half, 51 per cent, of millennials and nearly two thirds, 39 per cent, of the general public say they make their relationship look better to others than it really is.
What’s more, 42 per cent of millennials and 27 per cent of respondents admit to using social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram to give the impression that their relationship is perfect.
Earlier this year, Nikki Goldstein, a sexologist and relationship expert, claimed that this type of behaviour is a sign that someone is “seeking validation for their relationship from other people” and that taking relfies – relationship selfies – means that couples are missing out on important moments.
Madeleine Mason, a psychologist, dating coach and relationship expert agrees, stating that there are a number of reasons why couples want to portray success when things are less than rosy.
“People want attention, and positive stories are likely to be celebrated, liked and commented on,” she tells The Independent.
“In other cases, some feel pressurised to display success for fear of coming across as unsuccessful, and some people want to believe things are going well, so by curating a positive image they attempt to trick themselves into thinking things are fine.”
Mason adds that social media and reality TV shows also feed into this perceived need to “keep up with the Jones'”.

“While I think maintaining a facade to ones community about the true state of affairs has been common throughout the generations, it’s more apparent in an online community, which is mostly subscribed to by millennials,” she explains.
“The consequences can be that many people are more miserable than need be and there is a greater is of mental health issues as poor relationships are not dealt with.”
According to this new study, the majority of us are tiring of the concept of a perfect relationship, with 92 per cent of people admitting they would benefit if everyone was more open and honest.
It also found that the majority of millennials, 87 per cent, aspire to having a relationship for life and that a third, 33 per cent, of participants said their relationship had survived some form of infidelity.
Speaking of the findings, Relate counsellor Dee Holmes said: “As our research shows, there seems to be a lot of pressure today, particularly amongst millennials, to give the impression of the ‘perfect relationship’.

Nigeria may soon end

John Owen Nwachukwu

A Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Mahmoud Gumi, has said that the current security situation was capable of deviding the country.
The Islamic cleric noted the the clashes between farmers and Fulani herdsmen; members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN and the Nigeria Police, may end Nigeria.
Asked how he would assess the security situation in the country today, Gumi told Sun:
“I don’t believe so much in conspiracy theory, these things started long time before the advent of this administration. The Fulani herdsmen menace and its repercussion, I have seen it growing slowly before this government came to power.
“It became saturated because of the economic factor, suddenly the economy came into stagnation, and the people became desperate. So the economy blew out, and the security apparatus lacks adequate manpower and instruments to control the situation.
“It was a gradual thing and the economy bears the main point. You could see children under the age of 15 planning to kidnap, to get what? Money, because poverty is too widespread. So when you don’t get the economy right, you are going to destroy everything.
“It is not about ethnic or religious and political affiliation, it is purely economic war, and there is no religious colouration. In fact, when the herdsmen were attacking people in Benue and Plateau states, they said it was Islamization. When they attacked more Muslims in Zamfara, everybody kept quiet. The people in Zamfara State suffered this more than anybody.”
Asked if he thinks the long detention of Ibrahim El-zakzaky and Dasuki is justified, he added, “How can it be justified when the court of law said they should be released? This is what we are seeing in this government. Government should not use force to break the law of the land. In fact, they should be released when the law says they should be released.
“This is part of the thing we are saying that it is very negative about the constitution. Disobeying court order in day light. This is a nightmare that will haunt them one day, they will see the effect, how people will be talking about them. What legacy, what history does any leader want to keep? El-zakzaky has his own followers, Dasuki has his own followers.
“Two wrongs do not make a right, the moment government has mismanaged this thing, it has already turned them into some form of militancy which we hope, they are restricted, as soon as possible before they become full-blown insurrections.
“These people are no more afraid of authority because we have seen video clips where they are threatening police officers, and that is a sign that something should be done, otherwise they form their own authority.
“So now, it is left for Nigerians to say, look, this Nigeria is not for two of you, we have our children, we have our future, the government cannot mess us up, create another insurgency when we have one already, simply for not obeying court order.
“So government should equally address them too, Nigeria is not for you alone, you cannot impose your religion or creed on the country. Nigeria has to wake up because if we leave these two, they are all northerners, I know how our psychology is, and nobody wants to show he is defeated. But it is not a question of defeat, it is a question of law. Let them obey court order.”

NIGERIA: Another Islamic group declared terrorist by the Nigerian government

Federal government of Nigeria declares Shiites’ movement terrorist group

The federal government has proscribe the Shiites’ organisation, known as the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN.
The Federal High Court in Abuja had, on Friday, ordered the proscription of the Shiites’ movement after series of protests by the Islamic organisation in Abuja.
It was gathered that Nkeonye Maha issued the order in a ruling.
She also designated the activities of the Shiite organisation in any part of Nigeria as acts of terrorism and illegality.
The court restrained any person or group of persons from participating in any form of activities involving or concerning the IMN under any name or platform in Nigeria.
To complete the process of the proscription of the group, the court ordered the Attorney-General of the Federation “to publish the order proscribing the respondent (Islamic Movement in Nigeria) in the official gazette and two national dailies.”
The judge gave the order following an ex parte application by the Federal Government.
A copy of the ex parte application marked FHC/ABJ/CS/876/2019 was filed in the name of the ‘Attorney-General of the Federation.’
Justice Maha granted the four prayers contained in the application shortly after the Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr Dayo Apata, argued the application on Friday.
The IMN was the sole respondent to the application but the group was not represented by a lawyer on Friday since it was an ex parte hearing.
Ruling on Friday, the court made “a declaration that the activities of the respondent (Islamic Movement in Nigeria) in any part of Nigeria amounts to acts of terrorism and illegality.”

Migrants feared dead off Libya coast in 'worst Mediterranean tragedy'

The UN described the shipwreck of two boats carrying about 300 migrants as the 'worst Mediterranean tragedy' so far this year. Survivors were rescued by fishing boats and returned to detention centers in Libya.

The Libyan coast guard and UN refugee agency said up to 150 migrants were missing and feared drowned after two boats capsized about 120 kilometers (75 miles) east of the capital Tripoli on Thursday.
UN refugee agency spokesman Charlie Yaxley said 147 people had been saved. "We estimate that 150 migrants are potentially missing and died at sea," he added.
The survivors were picked up by local fishermen and then returned to the coast by the Libyan coastguard, Yaxley said.
"The worst Mediterranean tragedy of this year has just occurred," UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said, calling on European nations to resume rescue missions.
Grandi added that safe ways of passage out of North Africa were needed "before it is too late for many more desperate people."
People at the Tajoura detention center for migrants

The Libyan coast guard intercepted 30 people off the coast earlier this week and took them to the Tajoura detention center where an airstrike killed more than 50 people earlier this month. Over 200 detainees are still being held at the facility, which is close to where rival Libyan factions have been fighting.
The UN refugee agency reported that 164 people have died while trying to reach Europe from Libya since the start of the year. While the numbers are lower than in previous years, the dangers of attempting the passage have been increasing. According to the UN, one in every four people trying to cross the dangerous passage dies before reaching Europe.

At least 6 killed, mayor wounded in suicide bombing in Somalia's capital

Medical workers help a civilian who was wounded in a suicide bombing in Mogadishu, Somalia, on Wednesday.

The mayor of the Somali capital of Mogadishu was wounded and at least six others killed in a suicide bomb attack Wednesday on a government building, the country's information minister said.
The mayor, Abdirahman Omar Osman, was badly wounded in the blast, Somalia's Minister of Information Mohamed Abdi Hayir told reporters. Among those killed were two district commissioners and three regional-level directors, he said. In addition to the mayor, five others also were wounded, Hayir said.
Terror group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement, saying it targeted United Nations officials who were visiting the government building. CNN has not been able to independently confirm these claims.
Hours before the blast, James Swan, the UN special representative for Somalia and an American diplomat, met with the mayor and his district commissioners in the building but left after his meeting, police and the UN confirmed.
"I deplore this heinous attack which not only demonstrates a violent disregard for the sanctity of human life, but also targets Somalis working to improve the lives of their fellow Somalis in the Mogadishu-Banadir region," Swan said in a statement.
"The United Nations stands with the people and government of Somalia in their rejection of such terrorist acts, and our thoughts are with the victims of this attack."
Wednesday's attack follows another a few days earlier when a bomb went off near Mogadishu's international airport, killing 17 people. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for that attack.
